Lyocell clothing - sustainable & environmentally smiley

Lyocell made with wood pulpYou've seen it on OMyJimmy collection, but what is lyocell exactly??

Have you noticed a few high-end fashion designer using
this rather understated fabric for dresses?  What exactly is it?  Cotton?  Silk?  Polyester?  Or some sort of a blend?

Zero point to you!

Lyocell fiber is made by spinning wood pulp.  It is produced through a close-loop environmentally-friendly process with economical use of energy and water.  It is soft, breathable, lightweight, long-lasting, easy to care for, and is completely biodegradable.

As it means that lyocell garments are extremely comfortable to wear, it feels like your second skin, and magically silky soft to touch!  (Good luck keeping the boys away... ;))

Having won over many fashionistas, lyocell is often used by high-end designers as a better alternative to cotton jersey.

However, printed lyocell garments are rare!

They are rare for a good number of reasons:

  1. Lyocell is more costly than traditional jersey materials such as cotton, especially for 100% lyocell, which require special care and finishing.
  2. There are also various technical challenges for high quality screen printing onto 100% lyocell.  Many high-street brands would avoid it, as getting around these technical challenges require dedicated designers with good knowledge of new fabric developments as well as graphic design in great details, not quite high-street design then is it?

So designers often only use lyocell for plain drapey dresses.

Here comes *drum rolls*
